One of the most important parts of a house is its roof. A roof shelters your family and protects your belongings. When roofing fails, the entire structure of your home is at risk. Different roof types have advantages and disadvantages in durability, price, aesthetic appeal, and more. Do your research and consider all these factors when making your decision.
Different Asphalt Roof Types
The most common choice among all the different roof types available is asphalt shingles. The biggest benefit of asphalt shingles is their price. Their price varies based on the type of asphalt shingle, which correlates to durability.
For instance, you’ll pay more for architectural shingles than 3-tab, but they can last nearly twice as long. Asphalt shingles are easy to replace if an individual shingle falls off. They don’t have the longevity of stronger, more expensive materials like tiles and may not fare as well in severe weather.
Metal
Metal roofing offers great value. It costs slightly more than architectural asphalt shingles but can last up to 50 years. It comes in a variety of colors and types of metal. Metal roofs can be loud in the rain, which people see as both an advantage and a disadvantage.
Slate
Slate is typically installed on roofs in the form of tiles. Of the different roof types, slate tile roofs are one of the oldest still in use today. They have existed in America since the first English settlements. As such, they have a classic and historical look to them.
Beyond the aesthetic appeal, slate is very durable and can stand up against strong winds and even fire. They’ll also last a very long time. On the downside, slate is expensive, difficult to install, and heavy. Some structures may not be able to support slate roofing without first being reinforced.
Wood
Another option for roofing is wood. Wood shingles are both aesthetically appealing and durable. While usually made from cedar, they can also be crafted from other wood like teak.
The downside of wood shingles is that they don’t hold up well in excessive rainy conditions and require more maintenance than asphalt. Although they can be chemically treated, they are not fire-resistant and are not the safest choice among the different roof types.
Other Different Roof Types
The options above are only a starting point for all the different roof types available on the market. There are other tile choices to pick from like ceramic, concrete, and clay. Synthetic composite shingles are available that mimic slate and wood, yet require less upkeep.
You may choose a roof made from solar-shingles to lower your energy bill. Each choice has its advantages and disadvantages that should be examined to determine what’s right for your home.
